[1]swadhisthana chakra

Introduction to Mooladhara Chakra

The Mooladhara Chakra is represented by the element Earth, which is the most dense being a mixture of the water, fire, air and space. It gives stability and security and provides the sense of smell. Earth dominates for 20 minutes when breath flows from right or left nostril. The element Earth is the foundation of the body, the bones, flesh, skin, Nadis and body hair. It is best suited for stationary activities. It combines with water to form Kapha.

Ruler: Ganesha

Ganesha, son of Shiva Parvati should be invoked in the beginning. He is an obstacle breaker. His skin color is coral orange. He wears a lemon yellow dhoti. He has 4 arms to serve him while he acts as destroyer of obstacles.

  • In his upper right hand is hatchet - meaning control of “elephant of desires”.
  • Lower Right Hand - grants fearlessness.
  • His upper left hand holds a lasso (pash) meaning - the bondage of worldly attachment.
  • His lower left hand holds a ladoo-sattvic, ringing wealth & prosperity to the house.

Visualization of Ganesha helps to stop internal chatter and free up the right hemisphere of the brain and subdues the left hemisphere which is critical and prevents obstacle to sadhna or practise.

Its animal symbol is Airavat which is the white elephant of Indra with seven colored trunks like a rainbow. The seven colors are seven frequencies of light or seven desires, or seven aspects of individual consciousness, seven notes in the octave, seven planets or seven chakras.

Its deity is Brahama the lord of creation controls the North direction & is pure. Brahamas energy appear in twilight hours of dawn and dusk. Brahama has 4 heads depicting 4 directions, 4 aspects of human consciousness or 4 forms of sound

  • Para
  • Pashyanti
  • Madhyama
  • Vaikhari

The deity of Mooladhara Chakra is four headed Brahama representing the four directions and through his four heads he imparts cosmic wisdom as four Vedas. Brahama is invoked by bija mantra LANG.

The Mooladhara Chakra shakti is Dakini which comes from Dhatu, which means the “beholder”. You have to please the doorkeeper which is Dakini to enter the door of Sushumna. Dakini is the force of Brahama and is worshipped as radiant pink with red eyes. She is red like the rising sun and a fearsome goddess but her pleasant form should be meditated upon.

Dakini carries the light of Divine knowledge which she imparts to Yogi. Her single head indicates concentration, in which the aspirants “I” consciousness dissolves. She is divinely dressed and mother of wealth. Dakini has 4 arms and hands.

  • In lower right hand she holds a sword- to remove fear, destro ignorance and help the yogic to overcome obstacles.
  • In her upper right hand she holds - a shield for protection
  • In her lower left hand she hold - a skull which means detachment from fear of death - the basic psychological block of the first chakra
  • In her upper left hand she holds - trident which symbolises the combined energy of the creator, the preservor and destroyer.

Sound Meditation of Mooladhara Chakra

The seed sound LANG is produced by putting the lips in a square shape against the palate. When resonated properly it creates a lock that prevents downward movement of energy. The upward movement of energy starts when the end of the sound ANG vibrates the upper head. LA is the earth and NG is nada - bindu. Its vibration helps to create a passage inside Brahama Nadi. The mantra becomes live energy which takes away the insecurities of the first chakra.

Techniques & Effects Of Mooladhara Chakra Meditation

Effects of Mooladhara Chakra meditation on tip of the nose induce awareness, freedom from disease, inspiration, vitality, vigor, stamina, endurance, stability, security and lightness (the power of levitation). One achieves understanding of inner purity, softness of voice, and the power to hear inner melody (Nada).

One who knows Mooladhara Chakra goes beyond darkness. The knowledge of the world arises there and is also absorbed in this chakra. When the Kundalini rises it is radiant like a cluster of lights. By doing a special Kumbhaka ( holding of breath ) which can only be learned from a guru, the body shakes and becomes light. The Yogi starts dancing (levitating) and the universe in its subtle form is seen by the Yogi.

Behavioral Characteristics of Mooladhara Chakra

Behavioral characteristics associated with this Mooladhara Chakra encompass the plane of genesis, illusion, anger, greed, delusion, avarice and sensuality. The energy in the first chakra is connected with a desire of security in the form of job an shelter. One who is perpetually plagued by health problems or constantly struggling with financial crisis is caught on the first chakra level. Some unresolved conflict, whether it be physical, circumstantial or psychological, is keeping their consciousness trapped at this level.

Exercises for this involve grounding and working with first chakra. If this is your experience, ask yourself, what keeps you from wanting to change the situation? From whom do you need permission to take care of yourself? Who is responsible for your survival? For your survival you have - to Be & Have things . These are the rights of these chakra. The ability to have is an acquired skill. Expecting prosperity makes it easier to create. A vegetarian diet with protein keeps first Mooladhara Chakra happy.

Mooladhara Chakra from other traditions and other names of Mooladhara Chakra

When compared to the other important Tantric system of Vajrayana in Tibet, the Mooladhara Chakra finds no parallel in the same place, unlike the other 6 chakras. Instead, the Tibetan system positions 2 chakras on the sexual organ, the jewel wheel in the middle, near the tip, and the tip of the sexual organ itself. These chakras are extremely important for the generation of great bliss, and play an important role in Highest tantra sexual practices. In the Tibetan system, the red drop, called the red bodhicitta, is not located here, but instead at the navel wheel.

In the Sufi system of Lataif, there are 2 'lower' Lataif. One is the nafs, which is just below the navel. The nafs incorporates all the elements of man's 'lower self'. The other similar lataif is called the qalab, or mould, which appears in 7 lataif systems, and corresponds to the physical body, but this is sometimes located at the top of the head  Qalab is usually further divided into the 4 elements.

In the Kabbalah, the lowest Sephiroth is known as Malkuth, and performs the same transcendental role as the basis of physical nature. It is associated with the sexual organ, in close contact with Yesod.

Now I am revealing some fundamental practices for activation of Kundalini shakti which every aspirant should put to application.

  1. First of all the aspirant should purify his body with the aid of Neti, Dhyoti and Vasti.
  2. After that, the aspirant should practice eight kinds of Pranayam (Yogic exercises). He may also practice some other Yogic exercises besides Pranayam.
  3. Now the aspirant should learn from his Guru the essential mudras such as Mahamudra, Mahavedha, Mahabandh, Viparitakarani, Taran, Paridhan, Yuktichalan and Shaktichalani.
  4. The aspirant, having perfected all Yogic exercises should concentrate his psyche on 'Chakra' according to the method of 'Raj Yog'.

Daily Routine
  1. Get up at five in the morning.
  2. Practice both kinds of Bhrastika Pranayam (fast breathing) five to twenty five times.
  3. Practice both kinds of Shaktichalini Mudra five to ten times.
  4. Practice Taran Mudra with four to hundred & one Pranayam.
  5. Practice Praridhan Yukti Chalan Mudra.
  6. At last perform mental exercises of activating 'Chakra'.

The morning time should be devoted to all such exercises. In case you are not able to have ample time in the morning, you should exercise the following practices daily in the evening-

  1. Mahamudra - Five to twenty five times on each leg.
  2. Mahabandha - Five to twenty five times on each leg.
  3. Mahavedh - Both kinds of Mahavedh five to ten times.
  4. Viparitkarani Mudra - Five to ten times.
  5. The rest part of the time should be utilised for practice of activating 'Chakra'.

The aspirant who practices regularly all the above mentioned exercises derives early success. At an initial stage he may experience increased perspiration from his skin but gradually this perspiration will diminish and then he will perceive a lightening sensation in his entire body. After that he is likely to experience the movement of 'Pran Shakti' (life force) in the manner of crawling of an ant. Then he will experience the upliftment of Kundalini Shakti and also the activation of Mooladhara Chakra.

When such a stage arrives, the aspirant while remaining in the company of Guru should practice regularly because when the serpent power, crossing 'Mooladhara Chakra' ascends upwards, it may change its proper tract as a sequel to which some strange complaints associated with the blood circulation may supervene. But there is no possibility of occurrence of such dangerous situations provided one is acting as per the directive of his Sadguru.

At an advanced stage, when this life current enters the Sushumna, the aspirant may suffer from a gripping sensation around his waist, chest or neck but in a situation like this, he need not worry at all since this temporary bondage gets opened after few days' exercises.
