Introduction to Vishuddha Chakra

Shakti asks Shiva:

I want to go and feel the pure sound!

Shivoham Replies:

I will take you to a journey to a celestial temple which is in form of a circle in a canal and you can see the turquoise blue celestial sky which is turning to smoky purple. You will see the space appearing as a crescent and the sound of HANG emanating in golden color on an elephant. The crescent with a white circle inside of it is Nabhomandala (nabha-sky or void, mandala-region). It is like a full moon shining in the pericarp of Vishuddha Chakra. The silver crescent is the lunar symbol of nada, pure cosmic sound. Thus Shakti, the void is inside of the pure essence (tanmatra )of sound (nada). The crescent is a symbol of purity and akasha is the purest of all the elements. Purification is a vital aspect of the Vishuddha Chakra, as is pure knowledge(shuddha vidya), known in Tantra as the ten Mahavidyas or Sri Vidya.

The moon in any of its aspect impliespsychic energy, clairevoyance and communication without words. The moon in throat cools all that is hot.

Shakti, now I will explain to you about the Circle with Sixteen petals.

The 16 lotus petals are 16 matrikas or vowels which combine with the beeja NG to make a seed sound. NG is Nada Bindu the primal cosmic sound from which the universe manifested shown by the crescent Nada and dot Bindu above it. Example is:

  1. ANG related to Pranava , the mantra Aum spoken as Ang.
  2. A + NG = ANG related to Udhgita from Sam Veda in seed form, then 6 mantras.
  3. I + NG = ING  related to HANG (used in tantra).
  4. ING    related to PHAT (used in tantra).
  5. UNG  related to VASHAT (used in tantra).
  6. UNG related to SWADHA (used in tantra).
  7. RING related to SWAHA (used in fire ceremony).
  8. RING related to NAMAH (used to pay respect).
  9. LRING related to AMRITA (immortality) & 7 musical notes.
  10. LRING related to Nishad
  11. ENG related to Rishabha
  12. AING related to Gandhar
  13. ONG related to Shadja
  14. AUNG related to Madhyam
  15. ANG related to Dhaivat
  16. AHANG related to Pancham

There are 16 specific qualities related to musical sounds, frequencies in harmonic scale ad mantras used for invocation of divinities and are from right to left. The increase in number of petals come to an end here.

Shakti asks Shiva:

What vision does the aspirant get and who carries this sound?
What happens to the meditator?
What should the aspirant concentrate on? Who is the deity and the shakti?

Shivoham Replies:

Shivoham smiled to Shakti and elaborated:

At Vishuddha Chakra the aspirant sees Akasha (the void) which is anti matter. Akasha holds all the existence and is generated by the principle (tanmatra) of sound. There are 5 kinds of Akasha:

  1. Abharakasha – the atmospheric void
  2. Jalakasha – the void in water
  3. Ghatakasha – the void in an empty vessel
  4. Patakasha – the void in relation to a surface. It relates to mastak patal which is akasha created by japa of inaudible sound frequencies called nada. It relates to hridaya patal created by emotions on listening to music even though it has stopped.
  5. Mahaakasha – the supreme void in which only nothingness (shunya) exists. According to Buddha this shunya is reality.

Meditation on Vishuddha Chakra should be done in presence of Akasha element which dominates for 4 minutes. The sushumna channel is opened which is only for ten breaths per hour but this duration can be increased freeing the aspirant from time bound consciousness.

In Vishuddha Chakra all elements are the purest and dissolve in akasha depicted by circle and crescent at the top of the temple (stupa) within the body. The aspirant wons over the elements and is called tattvatit, one who has won over panch mahabhoot and I beyond their grip.

Shakti asks Shiva:

Who is the deity!

Shivoham Replies:

The Deity is Panchavaktra Shiva, combination of all Shiva energies working in different directions in different elements. His 5 heads signify 5 tanmatras & 5 elements which are united in his body.

  1. Earth from smell (gandha).
  2. Water from taste (Rasa).
  3. Fire from Form (Rupa).
  4. Air from touch (sparsha).
  5. Space /Akasha from sound (shabda).

His 5 heads represent his 5 facets which are:

  1. Aghora-lord of North,in his wrathful form he stays in cremation ground, face is round and nature like akasha or space.
  2. Ishana-lord of Northeast. He appears in shrines as Shivalingam. His face is round and nature is that of water.
  3. Tat Purusha-lord of East. His oval face is the central one of the five. He is Mahadeva and has controlled Prana and achieved Kumbhaka. His nature is that of air.
  4. Vamadeva-lord of all directions. He is Sada Shiva giver of left handed Tantra. His face is square and nature that of earth.
  5. Saddyojat-lord of South. He is Rudra, the wrathful deity in 3rd chakra shown as Braddha Rudra(old Shiva), but portrayed as youthful Shiva.

Panchavaktra Shiva is with 4 arms.

  1. Upper right hand in Abhai mudra iving fearlessness.
  2. Lower Right hands he holds the japamala for mantras.
  3. Lower Left hand holds drum/damru which drones continuously which produce the 14 Maheshvara Sutras from which all Sanskrit vowels and consonants evolve. The continuous beat of drum produces the Pranava Aum sound.
  4. His upper left hand holds Trident ,the staff of which means three gunas of Sat, Raj, Tam and three Nadis which are Ida, Pingala, Sushumna.

Panchavaktra is visualized as Master Guru. In him all elements have dissolved into one. The 5th chakra persons understands the elements and the human plane in totality. Awareness of eternal knowledge is grasped and all energies move upwards into 6th chakra. It brings blissful non duality, one is cleansed of all karmas and is born again into the realization of Oneness.

Shakti asks Shiva:

Who is the shakti of Vissudha chakra?

Shivoham Replies:

The shakti is Shakini. She is the doorkeeper. She is pure and peace giving. She has 5 heads meaning the 5 senses connected with lower 5 chakra and their elements. She is pale pink rose complexion and wears sky blue sari with green bodice sitting in (lotus pose) Padmasana.

Shakini shakti gives higher knowledge and siddhis (powers). Memory, ready wit, intuition, improvisation are granted by Shakini. The 5th chakra is the center of dreams in the body and her teachings are revealed in dream.

Her 4 arms hold the following:

  1. A Skull-means detachment from senses perceptions.
  2. An Ankusha-means Astaff used to control the elephant of intellect which can be too independent intoxicated with knowledge.
  3. The Scriptures-means the art of living right without complexes.
  4. A Rosary or japamala for mantras-rotated by fingers. Wood or seed beads help to absorb or retain one’s own energy. Crystals, gems have their own electromagnetic energy which when engaged with beads have engagement of consciousness. Working with mala pacifies internal dialogue.

Sound Meditation of Vishuddha Chakra

Shakti asks Shiva:

What is it that sounds from the space and is seated on 16 petals?

Shivoham Replies:

I will repeat it, Shakti, listen to this sound and feel it.

HANG, the sound hang is produced by forming an oval shape with the lips and pushing the air outwards from the throat. Concentration is centered in the hollow curve of the lower neck. When this sound is produced properly, it causes the cerebrospinal fluid to flow more freely into the throat region, bringing sweet and melodious qualities to the voice. The color of Bija Mantra is HANG is gold though some books say it is white with 4 arms. The Petals are as follows.

Vishuddha has sixteen purple petals upon which are written the 16 Sanskrit vowels in golden:

NB: Some vowels listed above do not strictly correspond to the grammatical definition of a Sanskrit vowel, specifically ॡ ḹ, अः ḥ, and अं ṃ.

The petals correspond to the vrittis of the mantra Ong [Aum], the Sama-mantras, the mantra Hung, the mantra Phat, the mantra Washat, the mantra Swadha, the mantra Swaha, the mantra Namak, the nectar Amrita, and then the seven musical tones.

The Seed sound is carried by elephant (gaja). Gaja carries the most primitive past knowledge of earth, herbs and plants. Gaja teaches patience, memory, self confidence, enjoyment of balance with nature. Its color is smoky grey or snowwhite. The ears of elephant symbolize the grace and sound of Vishuddha Chakra.

The single trunk represents pure sound NG which cnverts matrikas to bija sound. NG are nasal sound like gaja which moves energy upwards to the outermost brain cortex where impressions are stored which when converted to language carry the wisdom and knowledge that bring freedom from life-death cycle.

Techniques & Effects Of Vishuddha Chakra Meditation

Shakti asks Shiva:

Nama Shivaiah! How can I understand the techniques and effects of Vishuddha Meditation?

Shivoham Replies:

  1. Experience Shunya.
  2. Meditate in the hollow of throat.
  3. Ida, Pingala energy flow sops and Sushumna starts and akasha/space is experienced as void/shunya.
  4. But meditation is effected by sat, raj, tam gunas.
  5. Spoken words come from heart giving expression to emotions.
  6. The 5th chakra person words penetrate your heart and change the akasha of aspirant’s mind.
  7. Prayer, devotional songs arise from Anahata (heart) and create trance like spiritual state, while mantras arise from Vishuddha Chakra and are expressed by throat and bring out our divine energies and give form to formless.
  8. Meditation on throat chakra gives calmness, serenity, purity, a melodious voice, the command of speech and mantras, and the ability to compose poetry. The aspirant becomes youthful, full of ojas and can understand hidden message in dreams. The aspirant can interpret scriptures and becomes a good spiritual teacher (Braham Vidya, Suddha Vidya, Sri Vidya). The aspirant can travel through space. He gets other siddhis too.

Behavioral Characteristics of Vishuddha Chakra

Shakti asks Shiva:

How can a mortal man represent the behavioral characteristics of this chakra?

Shivoham Replies:

Shakti this is the chakra of spiritual rebirth. It encompasses the 5 planes.

  1. Physical
  2. Astral
  3. Celestial
  4. Balance and
  5. Human.

It also includes jnana, awareness that bestows bliss, Prana, the vital force through out the body that brings balance to all the elements, Apana, the air that cleanses the body and is charged with negative ion. Vyana, that regulates the blood flow.

The Janaloka (human Plane) becomes enriched with mantras and 16 harmonious qualities.

There are no distinct worldly characteristic in this chakra. As it is only reached by spiritual teachers.

Vishnu Granthi which stops upward flow of energy beyond fourth chakra can only be unknotted by true knowledge.

Aspirants who practice kundalini yoga can reach this chakra.

They spend more time inside than outside.

They sleep between 4-6 hours nightly changing sides.

The qualities vritties in this chakra to not create distractions but lead the aspirant to mantras and harmonic sound frequencies.

That absorbs the mind and undoes the last knot of I-consciousness, Rudra Granthi.

The fifth chakra comprehends non verbal messages for all eergy has been refined.

Persons from 28-35 years of age are influenced by Vishuddha Chakra.

The fifth chakra person seeks knowledge that is true, beyond the limitation of time, cultural conditioning and genetic code.

The main problem is doubt or negative intellect.

When knowledge is used unwisely it brings doubt but when knowledge is verified through meditation negativity dissolves.

Consciousness is still time bound but Ashtanga Yoga bring freedom from worldliness.

The Vishuddha Chakra is ruled by planet Jupiter.

It makes the person interested in ancient scriptures knowledge.

Jupiter is called Guru in Sanskrit which means dispeller of darkness.

Their writings are like scriptures.

Their presence removes ignorance by opening up channels of knowledge with their listeners.

An aura can be seen around the head of a fifth chakra person.

In the presence of such person the distractions created by the senses and mind cease to be a problem.

More about Vishuddha Chakra

Shakti asks Shiva:

Shivoham, what else can you tell me?

Shivoham Replies:

Extra Information which I will like to share is about Associated Minor Chakras.

Base of Neck

The ability to receive psychic information through the use of one's hearing is known as clairaudience. Psychic hearing or clairaudience is associated to the chakra located within the throat known as the "Throat Chakra." The Throat Chakra is associated with communication, creativity and spiritual growth. When this particular chakra is open and balanced there is a stronger tendency to develop clairaudient psychic abilities.

The ability to receive psychic information through the use of one's hearing is known as clairaudience. Clairaudience is a psychic ability that is often experienced by mediums. In these cases, the psychic medium can hear messages from those who past over. There are some psychics that may also have the psychic ability to hear music or sounds from the psychic plane.

It is important to note, that depending on the ability of the psychic, clairaudient information can be either an internal or external process. In other words, a psychic may either experience clairaudience as a literal experience of hearing things or they may be hearing psychic information from within their own beings. In either case, psychic information is being expressed through ones auditory processes.

There are seven energy centers located within the body. These energy centers are referred to as chakras. Developing psychic intuition can be enhanced by working with our chakras. Psychic intuition is a product of balancing the energy centers and developing a sense and connectedness.

The Throat Chakra tends to get blocked when there are inhibited emotions or an inability to express oneself in an authentic way. The Throat Chakra can also become blocked when you fail to take the time to listen to both your inner self and the feelings or experiences of others A good sign that your Throat Chakra may be out of balance is through physical symptoms such as soar throats, ear infections, neck tension, and headaches.

One of the most effective approaches to opening up your Throat Chakra is through meditation and visualization. Here is a quick exercise you can do on a daily basis to help balance this particular chakra.

  1. Find a time in the day where you can take 5 to 10 minutes for yourself without being disturbed.
  2. Pick a comfortable location where you can either sit or lie down.
  3. Take a few moments to relax and let your mind settle.
  4. When you feel ready take 10 deep breaths. Make sure you are taking enough time for each breath. This should be a relaxing experience and with each breath allow your body to release any tension it may be holding.
  5. Next, begin to focus on your throat chakra which is located at the base of your throat.
  6. In your minds eye, let your self see it, sense it, or feel it.
  7. Next imagine a blue light filling your entire throat. See this light as an energy source, filling your entire throat with its healing power.
  8. Next, ask yourself if there is anything you need to express: a feeling, a thought, an idea, etc.
  9. Now imagine the blue light pushing whatever needs to be expressed up your throat and out of your mouth. This should be a gentle experience. If you are uncomfortable or laborious, there is no need to try to force this process. Instead, return to the prior step of simply visualizing your throat filled with healing blue light.
  10. When you feel as though you have completed this exercise, focus back on your breathing.
  11. Gently familiarize yourself with your surroundings.
  12. Now, take some time to simply listen to your surroundings. What exactly do you hear? How does it make you feel?
  13. Write down your experience in a journal. Over time, your ability to psychically hear will become easily recognizable and more accessible.

Vishuddha Chakra from other traditions and other names of Vishuddha Chakra

Shakti asks Shiva:

How can I compare it with other systems?

Shivoham Replies:

The throat wheel is an important centre in the Highest Yoga traditions of Vajrayana. It is circular, red, with 16 upward pointing petals or channels. It is of particular importance for the practice of Dream Yoga. Correctly meditating upon it before going to sleep should produce lucid dreams, within which one can continue to practice yoga.

Western occultists make various differing kabbalistic associations with Vishuddha. Some associate it with the hidden sephirah Da'at, where 'wisdom' and 'understanding' are balanced in the supernal realm by the aspect of 'knowledge', a tangible idea, which is then expressed, leading to the act of the creation , others associate it with the sephirah Chesed and Geburah, mercy and strength, which are sephirah intimately associated with morality, and the concept that both expansion, as expressed by Chesed, and limitation, as expressed by Geburah, are necessary for the creation of individual beings. In terms of ethics, this is expressed by the yamas and niyamas (do's and do nots) of yoga.

In the system of the Sufi Lataif-e-sitta there are no Lataif in the throat, but there are three in the region of the heart which are arranged horizontally and not vertically. They are the Qalb, or heart, which is the battleground between the lower forces of the Nafs and the higher forces of the Ruh, or spirit; the Ruh which is said by some to be situated on the right hand side of the chest; and Sirr, or secret, between them both in the middle of the chest.

In Taoism, the position of lalana chakra in the roof of the mouth corresponds with a point known as 'The Heavenly Pool'.

This chakra experts have associated this centre astrologically with the planet Mars, and this is in keeping with the astrological series followed here.  Mars represents dynamic energy, and rules the sign of Aries, initiating new beginnings.  In the Qabalistic scheme too, in both the linear and the holistic/tree diagrams this centre is associated with the principle or Sphere of Mars.
